I happened to make it to Floor 19 with full health (roughly 250), full soul and zero mana. Luckily, on a Floor 18 sub-floor I encountered a God of Contract shrine and immediately switched over to him for the +5 to all stats boost that he provides. It's important to get your Dexterity up to 4 early, too, so you can equip a ranged weapon for ranged enemies, or an off-hand weapon instead of a shield for increased damage. Getting the Stamina point in early not only helps for early durability, but also helps to increase your late-game maximum health as it effects the max health increase that you get from picking up hearts. I like to allocate my stat points like this at level up: My playthrough was with Guy and I started with the God of Rock buff. I just so happened to score a couple of lucky critical hits and have 3 items that worked well against him in my inventory. I lost on him about four times until I finally beat him during a run that I admittedly did pretty poorly on. You will then make it to him and die numerous times, as well. You will fail numerous times along the way. You will not make it there on your first try. It will certainly take some luck to get down to Floor 20 in a good enough state to be able to defeat the boss. I just wanted to give some general tips and information on the boss in advance as there isn't really much about it on the internet. Since this game is so random, I realize that everyone will have a vastly different run than mine. He likely appears in Nightmare and Chaotic as well, but I have yet to verify this. The Nightmare Fiend is the final boss located on Floor 20 in Normal Mode.
